Ways to cope with your loved one's breast cancer:
  • Go to the doctor with her and feel free to ask questions of your own.
  • Be prepared for changes in her behavior and mood. She may become depressed or angry due to the medications and the stress that surround breast cancer.
  • Encourage her to be active and independent, gingerly of course. It will help her regain a sense of control and confidence.
  • Tend to your own needs. Don't forget yourself in the midst of this. She needs you now more than ever. Get enough sleep, eat right, and take time for yourself.
  • Don't take on the burden of taking care of your loved one by yourself. Ask other family members and friends for help. They are probably looking for ways to help and may just be uncomfortable about asking what exactly they can do.
Being there for someone with breast cancer can be extremely important. All your energies may be centered around helping the woman you love get through this time. But it's important for you to take care of yourself so that you can continue to stay strong, healthy and helpful. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Keep a positive attitude
  • Accept that you can't control everything
  • Assert your feelings, opinions or beliefs rather than become angry, combative or passive
  • Try to relax
  • Exercise regularly. Your body will be able to fight stress better when you're fit
  • Eat well-balanced meals
  • Rest and sleep.
